What is leadership? A leader is someone who is usually easily identifiable by people around them, but the concept of leadership isn't quite as simple to pin down.
The dictionary definition of leadership is pretty straight forward, and focuses on the actions that a person takes in order to influence other people to reach a goal. There are many different types of leadership styles, however, and every leader exhibits different skills, natural and learned talents, and team development styles. Some contend that leadership is nothing more than the ability to effectively use the resources that are available in your surrounding environment to complete a group project.
In most cases, a leader is someone who has authority within a group of people, but not always. Leaders throughout history have exhibited many different personality traits and natural talents, but the most common traits associated with leadership include intelligence, empathy, determination, integrity, self-confidence, adaptability, and organization. Other traits that some infamous and vilified leaders have exhibited include ruthlessness, ambition, cruelty and paranoia... although most of these individuals are often categorized as dictators or rulers rather than leaders.
While leadership skills are most celebrated in political leaders, large organizations or military bodies, the development of leadership style is also very important for managers in the business and corporate world, as well. Leadership management plays a large role in the success of companies across the world, and corporations with the most experienced and successful leaders at their helms often end up making the biggest profits.
